Oryx [i]was[/i] a hermaphrodite who became male in most aspects. Oryx [i]was[/i] also known as the Taken King, not the Taken Queen, regardless of sex.

Aurash was the daughter(female) of the first King. After becoming auryx she was male. Oryx was female at the beginning.

Aurash was a female, but Aurash along with Savathun and Xivu went through complex physical and mental changes when they were paired with their worms. After that, AURYX and later ORYX were hermaphrodites. Oryx was mostly masculine at this point, displaying typically male Hive traits (large horns, thick torso with no ‘breasts,’-see wizards- and a deep and gravelly voice.) It’s just semantics to say that at this point someone wouldn’t be called a king because before they were altered by an outside process they were female.
