In reference to Mayhem.
"Why give away a free mode when you have to pay people to build it?"
I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but Mayhem was a pre-existing mode brought over to Destiny 2 from Destiny 1. This isn't some brand new mode, outfitted with additional mechanics or assets here.
Beyond that, it's not the kind of thing that takes a lot of money to make either. You essentially have a carbon-copy of Elimination, and the developers just have to go in an manually alter the recharge values for guardians' abilities. That's the extent of the work needed to produce Mayhem.

You wouldn't import Mayhem from Destiny 1, but more so just replicate it in Destiny 2 via the way I described in my initial comment. As far as the cost to do such is concerned, it wouldn't require much money at all. You're talking about around an hour's worth of actual work, as Mayhem is just Elimination with faster recharge rates. This requires very minimal tailoring of coded values to produce. The idea that Eververse's profits are helping fund this game's content is a ludicrous statement at this point in time. Destiny 2 retails at $60 with DLC expansions priced at $20, and the game still feels lacking in content in the eyes of a lot of players. With the additional profits provided by Eververse that are supposedly helping fund the game, we should have a lot more accessible content to show for it. Hell, Bungie had to go in and make future Iron Banner and Faction Rally events accessible to all today, because they were originally going to try to make it only accessible to DLC owners.

ok, how much did that work cost?
