Yes, RoI occurred. The SIVA crisis is documented in several ghost scans:

Bungie seems to have tried to briefly reference D1 actions but keep most of D2 accessible to new players so there aren't too many unknown references to them.
I know some dialogue in the game varies if you are a new vs old player but it is pretty limited.

Thank you for the detailed response, my question was more asking if all of roi was cannon, I've scanned the thing on Titan and I heard the shaxx comment but there's only 2 returning characters and neither of them seem to remember you. And then Shiro is just gone.

The SIVA crisis is mentioned multiple times. As far as Shiro, I'd put him in the category of Petra or Variks. Characters who are still part of the universe but not in the current game. But they aren't erased from the story. It was poorly transitioned though and I feel bungie did a poor job in that aspect. I suspect but don't know, that it is likely due to RoI being a late unplanned DLC that coincided with the development of D2 and some things got mixed up.

That's an excellent point. The characters that haven't popped up again aren't only from RoI. Matter of fact, Petra isn't mentioned, at least that I heard, in D2 yet. I might have missed some scan or something, but to categorize this as a retconn of RoI isn't very accurate.

It's all because Saladin didn't recognize us. Eris, Shiro, Efrideet, Variks, Petra...none of them in game right now. But it is only the RoI ones people feel were retconned. Which is funny, because SIVA and the iron lords get way more D2 mentions than the other events of D1. Oryx and Crota only get mentioned once. Don't see anyone complaining that they were removed from the game.

Do you know when Efrideet is mentioned? I don't think I've found that if it's a scan point.
