I’d say most VR units are not worth it right now.

  • If there were some must have games for VR maybe it would be worth it, but as of right now there aren’t any games that are substantially better on VR. Also the controls still need some work. Maybe in another 5 years it would be worth it.

There a few games that are substantially better in VR. Resident Evil 7, Superhot, Dirt Rally, Eve, Skyrim - the mods. The whole game but in VR. + all these games come with regular control options if your not a fan of the moves, hotas, steering wheels etc.

  • I guess that’s a matter of preference. All of the games you listed aren’t drastically improved with the VR headset. A good pair of headphones tends to give similar effects. I could see the argument for Resident Evil 7 more so than the others, but even still I don’t think it’s worth it just yet.

Superhot is just a standard FPS on PC. M&K, point and click. VR transforms you into that game, where your physically able to reach out and grab objects/punch enemys, physically able to duck and weave bullets flying past your head (with the same 3D depth perception as you would in real life). Independent handling for each weapon you hold in your hands (you don't need to look where your shooting). All all your actions, throwing etc. Are as natural as what you would do in real life. You get non of that with the 2D version. So yea it drastical improves that game. Rally it's crucualy important to read the road. Judge the cambers, judge the bumps/climbs etc. Sliding through corners sideways you wanto easily be able to see where your going. VR actualy makes it a whole easy since you get that perception, the motion of knowing whether your climbing or descending that you can't replicate with a flat screen. Racing in general it just makes it easier to look around, check your rear/side mirrors. So yea it drastically improves the experience. Eve your either in the cockpit (VR) with hotas or just looking at a flat screen with hotas which you'de have to use head tracking or something to make it easier to see enemys whizzing past or behind you. Skyrim is already an immersive game, but you can't FULLY experience the sense of scale or depth of things around you looking at it through a flat screen, being placed in that world completely transforms it. Hell just looking off a cliff or even just standing nexto and talking to an NPC is a completely different experience. Then there's the fact that instead of just watching a character do things through a screen, you actualy are that character. I would MUCH hold the sword and shield in my what-feels-like my physical hands, the physical feeling of getting up and close in combat. Shooting a bow like a real bow, fire spells in the direction my physical hands are pointing, have the water (while i'm swimming actualy come up to my physical neck), being surrounded by the blizzard spell rather than just watching someone else do it. It COMPLETELY improves the experience, only things where a 2D experiece can improve it is with mods and you get to ramp up the graphics over its original 360/PS3 form.

  • I didn’t ask for how you felt those games were improved by VR. Like I said it’s personal preference. I could give reasons why I disagree with everything you said but hey, it’s not like it matters. I still don’t think VR is worth it. In 5 or so years it may have some amazing games that you can play on VR platforms, but right now they aren’t there. The games you listed are for the most part just ports of other games that don’t fully utilize VR, not could they ever due to their limited game mechanics that were never designed for VR. Personally I think VR will die out before any amazing games could out for it, but that’s just my opinion.

Saying in 5 or so years it might be worth it is like saying i'm not going to buy a PS4 because potentially in the future a PS5 might come out. It is here and there are plenty of amazing games for it! i say enjoy it! But if there's non that you might like that's a very valid reason not to get one. That and the price.

  • Simply put the technology isn’t where I would like it to be right now, and if it doesn’t die out like I think it will we may see some pretty awesome games in the next 5 to 10 years, because that’s about how long it should take for the technology to get to the level I’m looking for. For right now the only VR exclusive games across the various VR platforms that interest me are little more than tech demos that were build to showcase VR’s potential, and those hardly justify the cost for anything more than a cardboard cutout you use for smartphone virtual reality. The rest of the games on VR are little more than ports of games I already own or am not interested in playing, which is why I dissuade others from buying into VR for now.

Being only interest in the tech demos is being very narrow minded and not a good representation of what's on offer, but hey if that's all you like that's ok. As for the rest of the library, the majority are created for VR from the ground up but yes, there are a few which offer a 2D and VR option. VR technology will always be in a different world that 2D gaming, you need double the power, the latest in screen technology ain't cheap, tracking in a 3D space blablabla. Where it's at is near enough perfect for the moment, i would like the clarity of a 4k HDR screen in my eyes, but the power of a rig require to run that and the price of the HMD would be absurd. I would also like it to be wireless. But everything else is perfect for me, no tracking issue, no motion sickness, i'd like mayb some more peripherals? But the ones we got work just fine. Everything VR sacrifices, like a bit of resolution and a bit worse graphics is 100000x's worth it for the experience it offers over a conventional 2D screen and that's just for VR gaming! We havn't even touched on all the other things it can do.

  • Yeah, you are a romantic. I don’t think it’s half as neat as you think it is, and I’ve already stated my case. This is one situation where you can’t convince me, so you should spend your time somewhere else. I’ve already given my piece to the op.
