Consider that most of the long range kill records have been made with 660 grain .50 cal weapons. not 5.56. (but there have been some serious long kills with 7.62)

larger caliber bullets actually do fly longer distances, in real science. A .30 cal or .308 will hit targets at way longer distances compared to the 5.56
