I couldn't bring myself to read that article in full - it just seemed to be repeating itself and whining. I still don't know how to define someone as a 'real gamer'. I don't think it has anything to do with gender, and I refuse to believe it has anything even remotely to do with appearance like the article suggest. I can easily point out people who might not be as much of a game as I am, but that's just stating facts. Just like I'm not as much of a handglider as some people. I can't really comment too much without knowing how to define someone, but for now, the most appropriate response seems to be "Okay, mate. Sure thing." Plus, it's a Kotaku article. So I'm probably gonna go and get a shower.

 • There's no need for these definitions, that's the point.

 •
There's no need for these definitions, that's the point.
To some degree I feel like you're wrong. If people are labelling themselves as "gamers" then there needs to be something to define it. The problem is the kind of hierarchy people couple it with. Can someone who watches a boat load of eSports consider themselves a gamer?
Someone who plays videogames, there.
Casually or competitively? How often? What games? Do mobile games count? The problem as far as I'm concerned is that people consider gaming to be a hobby - and it isn't. And when people don't feel validated for what they believe to be their hobby, the get all uppity. Which is exactly the problem - it's not that people feel excluded. In all honesty, though, I don't think it's even nearly as much of a problem as people pretend it is. I mean, take this article. The only scenario she went into any real detail about what some kid being a kid... Further down she points out that people who play Final Fantasy games fear they're made out to be 'not a real gamer'... Final Fantasy. When have you ever seen anyone be criticised in such a way over such a huge RPG?

 •
Casually or competitively? How often? What games? Do mobile games count?
Why does any of that matter? Just let people enjoy something without feeling the need to add a label.
The problem as far as I'm concerned is that people consider gaming to be a hobby - and it isn't.
So what qualifies? Productivity? Creativity? Proactivity?
The only scenario she went into any real detail about what some kid being a kid...
Unfortunately, that situation is indicative of something endemic in life, a casual sexism still pervasive, whatever male privilege dictates. Just let people enjoy something without feeling the need to add a label.
The label exists, and it's definition varies from person to person - even people that consider themselves victims of this bullying.

The problem as far as I'm concerned is that people consider gaming to be a hobby - and it isn't.
So what qualifies? Productivity? Creativity? Proactivity?
Somewhat, amongst other things. It's a pass time - not a hobby.

The only scenario she went into any real detail about what some kid being a kid...
Unfortunately, that situation is indicative of something endemic in life, a casual sexism still pervasive, whatever male privilege dictates.
I'd have to give this more thought than I have the energy for right now.

Further down she points out that people who play Final Fantasy games fear they're made out to be 'not a real gamer'... Final Fantasy. Like I said, it seems more like people needing to feel validated over something that ultimately doesn't matter. I'm not saying there isn't a few dicks put there taking jabs at mobile gamers or something, but I don't really see it as that much of a problem.
