Long distance running all the way. I have my 5th marathon this November. I swim for "upper body" exercise. Its not a lot, but it works.

  • What's it like training for a marathon? Been thinking about doing one sometime within the next year.

If your goal is to finish in the 3:30-3:50 hour range its actually not too bad training wise. Your weekly mileage would probably top out around 50 miles (sub 3 hours you'll be in the 55 to 65). Long runs would build up to 14-16 miles, maybe 17 if you're feeling good. Easy days would be 30-50 minutes and 2 workouts a week. One tempo and one longer interval workout. You don't really need to do speed work as long as you have some natural speed. • My PR is 2:52, but I'm hoping for 2:45.

  • Nice! I've only done half-marathons because I don't have the patience for a full one.

  • To be honest halfs are the perfect distance. Not too long, but not short like a 5k. You should still do one marathon in your life. Got any races/goals coming up?

  • Got one tomorrow morning, actually (half). I'm not that consistent with my training, so my time is going to really hinge on the weather. Perfect conditions, I might break 1:45, which would be a PR. I'm would be too bothered by slower, as long as I still manage below 2 hours. Maybe next year I'll really go hard on training and actually get a decently competitive time, but that's unlikely.

  • 1:45 is respectable. Just make sure you start off a bit slower if you doubt your fitness. Stick with it man! Find a training partner and go for it.
