When people say that, I don't think they're criticizing the amount of effort put forth so much as a lack of subtlety, finesse, and understanding in the attempt.

    • I believe you mean "someone" not "something". Try again.

    • Trying to hard to get great grades? No. Trying to hard to get laid at bar by some random stray? Yes.

Of course. In some situations "less is more" rings very true. An example would be in art where adding too many details in other areas can distract the audience away from from the focal point or make the overall work seem chaotic or cluttered. You see the same thing in plastic surgery sometimes, where someone tries so hard for "perfection" that they end up looking less attractive. There's also the issue of fun factor. Sometimes you just want to hang out with friends and have a good time. Everyone likes to win but some people take it way too seriously to the point that a game loses its fun. Finally, there's something to be said for cutting your losses and moving on. Some people don't know when to quit and just end up digging themselves into a deeper and deeper hole. At a point it just becomes sad.

      • There's a big difference in trying hard to succeed at getting better or completing a task And spamming buttons on controllers to be like professional gamers while screaming into a mic like you know everything and t-bagging anyone you beat but that K/D be negative tho

      • There is and there can be consequences. Say you are running or maybe you simply over-doing something. The consequnce could be a pulled muscle or maybe a head-ache just minor things

Yes and no. For example, in certain sports you can criticize someone for trying too hard.

        • I think it was an aristocratic virtue that's since died off. I don't necessarily think it's so much about trying too hard as it is trying too hard at inconsequential things

        • Ah, the South Park mantra... If you care about/stand for anything then you're a hypocritical try hard nerd who should be mocked and scorned.

            • I remember in class we had to sketch a sheet draped over something, most people did tables chairs but this one guy did his girlfriends exposed ass, of course he didn't draw the juicy bits, but he got extra credit for creativity. Others felt like he tried to hard
