And my senses tell me when I was on a jet flying from Washington DC to London that clouds only went up so far and yet the sun still seemed to be 8 lightminutes away. They also told me that I did not perceive the sun's size to increase the higher up I got.

Then you were probably not flying during sunset/sunrise. Also, distant "thick" clouds may not have been present that day. All you encountered was lower atmosphere clouds.

A flight from D.C. to London is round 9 hours. Saw a sunrise. What is the point?

If the distant thick clouds were not present, you would not have seen them behind the sun.

There are no clouds beyond a certain point in earth's atmosphere.
