>conveniently ignores real causes and says "communism/socialism". I mean... i get you probably dont even know history past the fourth grade and differences betweem -isms .... But I dont see this venezuela facination fooling anyone above a GED. Your logic is as sound as me saying "look at southern and eastern africa... that is capitalism" and calling it a day. I wont even bother believing you have dusted off a book and realize the US has undermined just about every instance since the start of the cold war anyways. It was my main reason for disliking hillary.

 •
>conveniently ignores real causes and says "communism/socialism".
I didn't ignore them, I've addressed the causes in my conversation with PaulM1c3. But I'll summarize the main points. After oil prices went down in the 80s, Venezuela's economy crashed because it was heavily reliant on oil exportation. With this crash, Hugo Chavez siezed the opportunity to take power by promising the people that he would make them less reliant on oil prices. However, he does the complete opposite when he adopts many socialist policies that see him taking private property from the manufacturing and agriculture sector to redistribute the wealth, which resulted in capital flight for those businesses. To avoid some of the oil companies from leaving, he leveled with them through various agreements. The reason why his socialist government didn't destroy the economy with its heavy reliance on oil was because oil prices went back up. Also, Chavez kept his power by also using some of the funds he gained from the property appropriation he conducted. When he peaced out (died), and Maduro took his spot, oil prices went down. This lead to where Venezuela is today.

 • So based on this... it DID work, but is now being mismanaged by his successor... is that right?

 •
So based on this... it DID work, but is now being mismanaged by his successor... is that right?
Yes proving the ever old statements "power corrupts" and "heirs of your hard work tend to not appreciate what you've created for them" correct. For those two reasons alone, socialism doesn't work. It only works initially when the honest guy sets everything up. Then some asshole comes in after, usurps power and ruins everything. Venezuela is the latest indication of this. The same will happen if Bernie takes over. Everything will be peachy during his term but the next president after him? I'd be worried about that guy to say the least.

 • The difference here would be how elections take place. Bernie advocates democratic socialism.. correct? Someone wont just take over bernie. There would be elections. They can still be voted out of power Soooo....

 • The same thing applies to any system. A system is as good as its leader. Wether is the government or the businessmen, the result will always be the same.

 • Oil prices are independent from Maduro coming to power. When the prices went down, inflation skyrocketed to 720.5% and the poverty rate went up to 82%. Maduro just stoked the flames of an already raging fire when he essentially took the people's rights away from them.

 • Right now it's almost 1 now and I need to go to bed. Will argue with you tomorrow when I get the chance. From what I'm hearing, you haven't delved into what Chavez did during his presidency that help lead to the current situation.
