I think the problem Venezuelan socialism has is that it was held together by Chavez. Now that he's gone, the whole project is falling apart.

The problem is with socialism no one can afford food so they starve
-
Well despite all of Chavez's many flaws, Venezuela was relatively successful economically during his time as president, it's just since then the problems have occurred.
-
it takes a little while for communist/socialist economies to burn out.

But the same occurs to a purely capitalist system, what we need is a balance between the 2. Just look at Clement Attlee, the UK PM after WW2, he managed to combine socialist policies, such as the NHS, the welfare state and social housing, with sound economic policies, like high investment in the country to allow business to flourish. As a result of this in just 5 years he dropped the national debt by 50% of GDP, saw one of the largest times of growth in British history, created full employment, and massively improved society. This is the sort of middle ground we should be aiming for.
-
we tried that over here in america and it didn't work for us
-
No you didn't, not in the way we did in the UK, the closest you ever got was the New Deal which did work.
