Always wanted to know, what do they mean by stage 1, mostly top end engine work heads, intake, exhaust?
For an extra $115, buyers could have obtained the Stage 1 option. Its cylinder heads were massaged to accept larger 2.12/1.75-inch intake/exhaust valves, and compression was increased from 10.0:1 to 10.5:1. Diving deeper into the block, a more aggressive camshaft was installed touting an intake/exhaust lift of 0.490-inch with 316/340 degrees of duration. Officially these changes generated just 10 additional horses; however, a more realistic output rating is believed to have been closer to 395 hp, if not higher.
This was only on the GSX. It was the only factory muscle car that could actually defeat a Hemi powered Chrysler product of the era. Bone stock 455 Stage 1 motors have been dyno'ed at 400+ hp with 455 ft/lbs of torque. Quite the upgrade for only $115.00.

Thanks for rubbing it in bout beating the mighty hemi, but I understand why it's faster, it has massive torque like 500+ at 4800 rpm or something

Stage 1 cars from Buick all had 455's, posi trac differentials , headwork, and a cam I believe. Maybe some other stuff too.

I know with Roush, it was usually suspension & mild engine improvements, maybe a body kit, if I remember correctly. Basically, if you could not afford the full badass car, you could build it in stages, as you could afford.

I don't know why anyone would bother with a Stage I Roush. Go big or mod it yourself.

Actually, I meant to respond to the other guy.... My mistake.

You can buy the upgrade kits to make your stage 1 a stage 2 & your stage 2 a stage 3. It is a money thing. Some people have the money to buy a stage 3 & some do not, but they want that, so they buy the next stage kit when they can afford it. I do not understand the fools that buy stage 1 for the appearance package, then try to convince people they have a stage 3. I was just referencing something current to help explain what the guy was asking.
-
Nah back in these days it meant something and this stage 1 got you a 455.
-
That was the GSX. Stage 1 was an additional package beyond that.
-
Ah my mistake.
-
If someone says "my car is stage 1" I immediately know they have no -blam!-ing clue what they're talking about.
-
Like I said above GS stage 1s are 455's and come from the factory with some nice work done so don't automatically assume that if they say they have a GS stage 1.

Edited by kindkitten90593: 7/6/2017 2:55:33 PMI didn't mean you, I meant in general:) If the factory calls a car "stage 1/2/3" it's fine. I meant when cars are modded it makes you/them look silly. Sorry for the mixup
