So an Emperor leads a legion across the Galaxy to battle people who defeated scouts? Well, that along with the devs considering "The Darkness" unimportant proves bad story telling will be making a return from D1. Hugely disappointed.

 • The Darkness are just forces against the Light, just really any enemy who wishes to either cripple or take the traveler for themselves. It's not the "Cloud of black space dust" we see in the opening cinematic.

 • Well, he is more of a Military dictator. So it kind of makes sense for him to lead. He is also hungry for the light. Consul may be a sort of ambassador to the dark sent to corrupt Ghaul, or the darkness itself. This explains why he wants the light so bad(along with him thinking that he deserves the light). Just my thoughts of course.

 • And we are zombies trying to protect humans. Does any of this make a lot of sense?

 • You make valid points. However: 1) they're a martial race of technologically superior space turtles that so far haven't encountered anything that can stop them and the lore supports this by commenting on the arrogance they show with the lack of security in their installations, etc. 2) capturing the Traveller isn't an insignificant thing for an Emperor, defacto or not, to do. 3) you seen the size of the cünt?! 4) it's dramatic 5) he's fücking huge! 6) most importantly, it's a video game. ☮️

 • Ehhh... sounds more like the Emperor traveled all that way because of the immensely important thing the scouts discovered. That's pretty normal.

 • Your human notion of leading a military campaign is different to a fictional alien race's opinion.

 • Cabal are exiled when they leave for war so Ghaul is technically not the emperor in D2

 • It's pretty dumb sending their leader but we are a pretty massive threat.

 • According to lore, they haven't fought an enemy that has beaten them. So to them, sending their leader is actually, while pretty arrogant, not really out of the norm for them.

 • Plus, Gary apparently deposed the ACTUAL Emperor. So he's apparently a bit... Ambitious.

 • Ambitious, arrogant, and greedy are qualities of Ghaul for sure, considering he wants to take the Traveler for the Cabal, thinks they chose wrong, and is going in himself to make sure it happens.

 • Exactly. Plus, that article said that he led a coup. Perhaps he's a bit afraid of betrayal

 • So an Emperor overseeing the campaign to capture the most powerful object in the known universe isn't believable? Okay, kiddo. Bad writing. Sure.

 • It is. There's a reason no world leaders go to battle. It's considered reckless and idiotic cause it paints a target on your back that almost insures you won't survive, which in turn will cripple your nation. And I'm 19 btw

 • Ghaul would go, considering two things. One, he lead a coup against the true Emperor. He might be of the opinion that, if he isn't there to claim the Traveler, he could be betrayed. Two, he's cocky. He thinks that the Light is his by right. Why not go claim it himself? Three, ancient military leaders did ride with their units. Caesar, Oda, Iskandar, etc.

 • Keyword being ancient. As I've said several times in this thread so far, a highly militaristic space-age civilization would've discovered the folly of that tactic centuries ago

 • Perhaps it's not folly to them. Perhaps they see it as a test of worth. Plus, we've seen something. Cabal seem to promote on order of badassery. Their leaders are the strongest, smartest, and deadliest of them

 • The Cabal are a highly militaristic civilization. Being alien doesn't somehow magically make a terrible military tactic work for them. And if that is indeed what Bungie is going for, it just reiterates my point that the is an example of horrendous story telling

 • It's actually a fine storytelling plan. Shows us how utterly alien the Cabal's methods are compared to us. As to it's viability, the Cabal apparently have a pretty big empire. Their mentality might be akin to "survival of the fittest". A leader who is stupid or weak enough to get killed isn't fit to lead in their books.

 • Being alien does not magically change the Art of War. Painting a target on your leaders back by sending him into the front lines and getting him killed is something Empires never survive. If Cabal utilize this tactic, there is no way they could possibly ever be strong enough to grow this large. Plus even if that were the case, that doesnt explain whatsoever why he decides to personally deal with people who took out scouts (i.e. the part that's horrendous story telling)

 • Firstly, the Art of War is a Human invention. Cabal may have their own version. Also, look at how the leadership is set up. There are distinct layers. Presumably, should a leader be found wanting and die, their second will take up the mantle. As to why Ghaul is after us personally, there are a few reasons. One, it's not about avenging the scouts. It's about what they found. Ontological/Temporal weaponry, powerful machine entities... And the Light. He's there to claim that for the Cabal. Secondly, it says he staged a coup against the former Emperor. It's possible that he doesn't trust that he won't be betrayed.
