I really wonder how this and the VW scandal will affect diesel as a whole.

They obviously fill a niche that gas can't, and I do't see diesel hybrids creating enough long term torque for then to be implemented in large trucks. Unless they take a page from the locomotive industry. But the political side of all this is where it gets sketchy.

These regulations have become increasingly stronger in a relatively short amount of time. Technology just hasn't caught up with diesel yet. Everyone thought the catalytic converter would kill gas but the engines are better than ever.
