You never know, it might be that you can just have four selected at any time, but ANY four out of the two grids. Its just that if youve only unlocked the first 4 then you can only have them selected.
I hope. It sounds better than only having two options.

Bungie confirmed you can only use 1 grid at a time but can freely swap between the 2 just like subclasses.

They turn the classes situational. Each tree will give each subclass diversity without allowing an unbalance. And removes all of those tedious perks no one really cared about changing.
