I can't say if this has occurred in D2 or not, but I can tell you there was a reason why it didn't happen in D1. I've explained it elsewhere, so I'll stick to the short version. Bungie had a few devs working hard to get the system up and running correctly, and they did that. Such code is always rougher, not commented or cleaned up, little to no documentation, etc. And then they either got told to simply use it as it was, or more likely, they got pulled into another part of the project. So the code was jumbled up, hard to work with, almost impossible to maintain, and it got worse with every patch. That put things in a position where it was already basically impossible to separate the 2 combat systems. So when they were faced with the choice of balancing for PvP and annoying the PvE players, or balancing for PvE and ruining the entire PvP aspect, they chose the lesser of two evils. Because remember, a small change to PvE is irritating, but a small change in PvP can ruin the entire system, and I'm not being sarcastic when I say that. Hopefully they got it together in D2, but I'm not betting either way right now.

  • Source? I mean cool story and all but Bungie has taken the same stance all along that this setup was intentional. They want everything to feel the same or similar from PvE to PvP. Your story might very well be the case, but Bungie also wants it this way. David Allen supported that in his most recent interview with Kotaku at the D2 Reveal. I am honestly very surprised they are going this route. WoW eventually had to separate the two so I don't know why Bungie doesn't learn from their mistakes rather than trying to repeat them.

  • The Source on this is literally industry knowledge. I cannot 100% confirm that this is the case, but from an analytical standpoint this is what it looks like when you start off with crappy code base. It turns into a horrible snowball, what's just continues to roll down hill further and further. The end result is a product that nobody knows how to maintain, and nobody knows how to alter.
