In that image of the two guardians "staring at the two stars" it looks to me like it is our sun recently torn in half as there are trails of fire behind each thing, as if they were quickly driven apart

I thought that it was two stars being merged but what you said makes more sense. The laser the cabal fired could have been to split the sun in two.
