I think you're forgetting the Alpha build of Destiny, Beta build of Destiny and our current finished Beta build were playing rn
Do you seriously think D2 is going to be a better Destiny 1? No, so far the stuff they showed looks like they regressed in terms of UI and cosmetics and even abilities, gun play, weapon dmg, etc
So far current D1 looks better than D2 Beta builds.

Of course you might have a situation where a dedicated and sizeable number of people keep playing "classic" D1 instead of D2 or even D3, servers permitting.

Maybe that's because Destiny has been out for >3.5 years and Destiny 2 is in pre-alpha.
