Also as speculation, I believe the abilities come, as the traveler suffers more damage, we get more intense abilities.
In a world without light, as quoted from a Destiny2 merchandise, this is extremely hypocritical.
Therefore, if we follow in this sense, we lose our abilities, allowing the Darkness to leak into our abilities and tempt us to join.
Hopefully we won't join.
