Doesn't have to be. You could do the encounter as normal, and when it's damage time, don't damage him at all. Just grab the bombs and close the rooms with them as you would for four rooms. Then when it's go time on the third damage phase, go all out.

Or or, get him to one health on the first phase so you have 2 phases of just stay alive.
