I started with the operative specialization and am going with cloak, lance and the shield one for now. Probably will go for biotic charge down the road.
Picking operative makes it a bit difficult in the beginning imo, with that being your only power. Good for escapes though.
As for weapons, running with a good old carnifex, with the pathfinder AR secondary at the moment. Sadly ammo can be kind of scarce and the carnifex doesn't hold much extra ammo so I cant use it nearly as much as I'd like (spec'ing into pistols helps though).

I have thought about that one but seeing how often im seen out of cover (or naded out) i chose barrier instead. The flamer was all i ever wanted. I just missed my fortified geth flamer soldier and reegar finish... but i did good with a black widow/cloak build (cheesed 3 with it) so this is pretty much hybrid.

Lance is pretty powerful even at the beginning. No travel time, high impact. Basically the sniper of biotic abilities. So far it can kill most unshielded enemies outright, though that may not hold into the late game without good upgrades.

I feel the same of the flamer. Melts health bars in a flash so my cd on it stays very low even at its base form. I might switch to the lance but the flamer saves me a shotgun slot and a backup to my snipe. I can see it as invaluable to a vanguard though.
