Every console that has launched has had broken or defected consoles in a decent number. It wasn't until 360s rrod failure rate went through the roof that we really cared.
Now every console that ever launches, we are gonna try to match that intensity of 360s defects. It happened when ps4 launched and people were getting the blue line and the console wouldn't work. It was an extremely small amount of consoles messed up but the story was blown up to show a supposed huge problem.
Go on youtube and see all the videos of people showing their broken consoles out of the box and sure you will find enough videos and that makes it seem like an epidemic cause no one is uploading vids of their console working just fine.

It's because Nintendo tried to cut corners so they had to pay less to male the console, for example, they used a plastic screen instead of a glass one. This is the main reason that the scratching occurs, just because they wanted to save a few bucks.
