What Makes A Game "Dead"?

What does it take for you to claim a game as "dead"? Maybe name some examples if you like.

  • When casual players begin to quit playing and the only players are dedicated, sweaty kids who have invested $100+ on micro transactions and stream it all the time.

    • Loss of player base. For example go look at Halo 3's population on the 360. Dead. Sadly.

    • Section 8: Prejudice is a dead game. Probably was DoA, now that I think about it. It was a great game too.

    • I think only multi-player games can die. With single player games, it doesn't require the developer to keep servers running or enough people playing to find matches.

    • When the company stops regularly updating it. Some CoD games still have s good fan base, but are (in my eyes) dead, as nothing new is coming to them. Like movies from an actor, you can still watch them, but since they're dead, nothing new will come from them

I don't in all honestly it's a rather stupid term to use on a game I suppose if no one could play anymore I'd consider it dead other then that I'm sure someone's out there playing it

    • A multiplayer game, or at least mostly MP game that has no playerbase and is abandoned by its developer. For example, Tribes Accend.

    • When the devs stop supporting, adding content to the game, and when the playerbase falls below a certain number of active players (let's say, 1000 players). For example, it is almost impossible to matchmake in battleborn right now due to the small number off players still active. The division feels a bit empty too nowadays.

      • Halo 4's population after 2 weeks is a good example of a dead game. Most times it's used to shit-talk a successful game. i.e: the flood of threads claiming X game will kill Halo 3 back in '08-09

      • A games servers being shut down is a good example of a game reaching the end of its lifespan, the term doesn't affect single player experiences

        • Abandonment by most of its player base. The Division is a great example of a dead game.

        • Effectively abandoned by both the players and the developer.

        • A game I'll use as an example is cod ghosts on the PC. 3 game modes are playable: team deathmatch, strikezone, and hardcore team death match. I'd consider that dead, as I've yet to see it reach 2000 players online, and it has no dev support as it is an older cod. I assume it's the same on console but I've not recently played it there so I can't speak for it.
