Thrash metal, with bands like Iron Maiden taking the lead. Behind that, I really don't know what I prefer most.

Iron Maiden is not Thrash Metal. If anything other than Heavy Metal, Iron Maiden is Power Metal. Thrash is more bands like Pantera, Down, Slayer, Megadeth, Damage Plan, Slayer, etc...

I usually identify them as Thrash due to their speed and power being at the right balance. It's like old Metallica on steroids IMO.

They are no where near as aggressive as a Thrash Metal band. Old Metallica especially. Compare "Kill Em' All" to "Piece of Mind" Both released in 1983 and they couldn't be more different. Maiden is far more melodic, with more epic overtones with story structure. In all honesty, Piece of Mind was probably the first Maiden Album that started going towards Power Metal. Modern Maiden is VERY Power metal.

They have a few good jams like Raining Blood, but I don't listen to them too often.

Yeah, i do find their latest songs to be a bit angsty like repentless.

I like power metal the most. If your looking into it i suggest Helloween, man o war, sabaton, hammerfall and dragonforce.
