This can be a very hard theory. My opinion is : The Stranger , can be representing Bungie and the gun(The Stranger Rifle) the most important thing that Bungie had( The Halo idea), this scene of the game can be showing what happened with Bungie and Microsoft, Bungie used to have Halo , but now Microsoft have Halo. Bungie just lost the most important thing that they have ever made, the most successful franchise , as a guardian loses his gun that is the most important thing that a guardian can have. This is my theory.

I had an idea like that, but not so much involving the gun, and I couldn't find as much evidence as this one. I disagree that a guardians most important possession is their gun. I believe that a guardians most important possession is their light. The exo Stranger could represent what the halo franchise has or will become. "You're not a guardian.", "No little light." "You're not what we wanted you to be.", "but that's not important to us."
