Don't need to play the previous ff to play ffxv. Each game is a stand alone story and have nothing to do with one another (other than iconic monsters and certain characters making special appearances every time.) I'd recommend playing the past hames to understand the series history and see how far it came and where/why its popularity came from. But no, you don't need to play the past entries to enjoy this one.

  • I only played through disc 1 on 13 so I'm hoping that's enough background

  • This one and FFIII aren't related, so no need to worry there. Originally back when FFXV was called FFvXIII it was related to FFXIII, but since then (10 years ago lol) the game and story has changed and rebranded to FFXV and made into its own self contained story unrelated to FFXIII like it was intended back then. So go and play FFXV without worry that you're missing out by no playing/finishing FFXIII. Its considered to be the weakest entry in the series, so don't feel too bad. FFXIII is still a good game, just not a very good FF game lol.

  • But I've never played a single final Fantasy game. What about mechanics? Anything I should know?

Nah, the mechanics in this one are drastically changed from the past series lol. FFXV took a lot from the now popular Western rpgs like witcher and a bit from tes and even a little bit uncharted lol. Monsters summons and other iconic themes are still there, but the use is slightly different and fitting for the world and gameplay they crafted. You will still be able to enjoy it, but when you cine across some npcs like cid, biggs and wedge you wont get that nostalgic "ooh shit there they are and that's how they included them" feel. To you they may be just another npc in the world, but that wont take away from the fun of ffxv itself for you. I had that feeling early on when seeing Diamond Weapon and Jormungand lol.

  • The story any good? Cause I like RPGs, Mass Effect being my favorite game series ever.

  • Yes, I live the story. I'd tell you why, but it might be spoily lol.
