It's dangerous, but since we refuse to let natural selection take it's place (ie down syndrome and other birth defects), genetic engineering might be the only way to evolve as a species.

How would you suggest we let natural selection take place? You know, considering the fact that murdering someone for having a disability is not only illegal but goes against everything that makes us "civilised."
-
People with those disabilities provide nothing to the current society. They cannot further the progression of the human race. The average IQ is low enough as it is. Why bring it down more?
-
That's incredibly ignorant of you.
-
In what way is wanting non-functioning members of society to disappear? It's called survival of the fittest for a reason.
-
The part that is ignorant is you calling the disabled non - functional and saying they do not progress society. Not that you want them to disappear. That part is just called being a dick.
-
Oh really? Whens the last time you saw "Scientist with Downs Syndrome discovered Higgs-Boson Particle"? Oh yeah, that's right: never. You see "oh (blank) in the mall is adorable" Or "look at (blank) trying to sing" They are not functioning members of society. It's not being a dick. Their physical IQ is less than even below average. They will not contribute anything meaningful to the progression of the human race.
-
So you're implying the only way that someone can be beneficial to society is by advancing scientific discoveries? *laughs hysterically* I personally was not discussing just down's syndrome anyway, because it is a fact that that disability comes with reduced IQ. I was talking about the disabled in general, which affects a large proportion of society and actually has been known to advance both science and technology, which are both fields you seem to think are the only important ones.
-
Not necessarily. Only implying that people with a lower IQ don't contribute as much as higher IQ. Especially those with an exceptionally low ones.
-
Which is what I'm disagreeing with, as you're wrong. Intelligence does not equate to usefulness in the same way that physical strength doesn't, they only make you more adept at particular fields. Even concerning intelligence, there are different kinds. There are different kinds of strength as well. You cannot determine one person's usefulness based on one aspect of their person, you can only determine how useful they will be in a given situation/job.
-
Let's just agree to disagree there pal.
-
Not hiding behind the "civilized" tag is a starter, feelings are great but they need to be kept in check.
-
So you would wish to kill everyone with a disability? Great suggestion...
-
That and mechanical augmentation.
