Honestly, I think VR is just a gimmick that will pass in a few years. I could be wrong, but that seems like the impression I'm getting from it. I have a feeling it will have a similar outcome to the whole "motion-control" craze (Kinect, PlayStation Move, etc).

The motion control craze was Sony imitating Nintendo, as they always do, and Microsoft hopping on the bandwagon because... Why not? This is actually good as its the best VR experience for console players.
