My brother got the $30 on his account (we share an xbox) from the code but every time he tries to buy it in the game it says "query failed: could not establish connection to the xbox games store. New silver purchases will update when you next sign in." Do you know how to fix this?

Faulty code is what it sounds like cause of the bit about silver. Contact microsoft for more information.
