I'm proud of you for questioning the belief system you grew up in. It shows you have the will to think for your own. I had a similar upbringing to you, but my parents didn't really give a shit about whether I stayed with the belief or not. But luckily, you don't have reccurring mental illness because of the indoctrination like I do, so that's good. Anyways, I wish you luck in discovering yourself. One day, your family will accept that you believe in what you believe in. Continue to live the way you want to. Your family, no matter how much they love you or don't love you, should never be able to live or decide your life for you. At the same time, keep trying to understand how they feel. Right now, a tolerance of each other is what your family should strive for. It might take a while, but one day it will get there.

  • So what is this recurring mental illness of indoctrination you speak of?

  • Depression as a result of indoctrination,n it just being forced to go to church. When you're raised catholic in a catholic school, the basically teach you that you're worthless and that you'll never be good enough but you should try harder anyway despite perfection and complete joblessness being impossible. I basically have no self esteem now

  • Are you out of the church/organization? Jesus Christ never taught that and it's a shame you had to go through that. Not every religion is the same some worse than others. I'm sorry you had to go through that and hope you can overcome what you are going through. It'll be hard but the best thing to do is heal. Rebuild what you have lost. We all the capabalities mentally to be torn down and rebuilt. You probably don't want to hear religious preaching but think of Job in the bible. He lost everything. Family, friends, livestock. But he pulled through in the end.. Some may take longer than others. Hopefully you can find the peace you seek..

  • No, I understand that story. It's one of the few bible takes I look back and reflect on, actually. I've been atheist for 5 years now and I'm in a college known for engineering and I'm in therapy now. I can't say it's all a bed of roses now since the scars are still there, but it's definitely better. I appreciate your concerns and thoughts about it though.

  • No problem man being of whatever faith or no faith we should all be concerned for one another, some will be more than others but know there are those that have their extreme views and those that truly care and are not imposing as others. Religion these days are getting a bad name....
