While well thought, the connection is weak.
A lot of guardians fit the previous Yor identity criteria as having been a noble man, great deeds, and secret fears.
Unfortunately bungie hasn't officially closed the door on Yors class so even that debate continues.
The biggest problem the theory has is that one little word: Before.
Before he took Pahanins light, dredgen Yor ruled the crucible, the notorious thorn at his side.
He had thorn therefore already corrupted before he killed pahanin.
If the darth vader/anakin analogy were true, that statement wouldn't work. He was already corrupted before killing pahanin meaning he had already assumed the Yor identity. Had that flavor text left out the part about already having thorn, it would have left the door cracked for this theory to work.
I don't think Yors original identity is a guardian we know of yet.

All i know he was a hunter that used last word
-
Well, just because he's corrupted doesn't mean he's fully transformed into Yor yet, just like Anakin, he wasn't fully Darth Vader until he went on that killing spree and officially left the Light Side
-
The moment that he knew he could commit such a heinous act he became one with the Darkside. It doesn't have to be a moment that you can tangibly see, it is an internal thing.
-
True, still, he still could have come back, in which he actually does into the end... Sadly, Yor didn't have that same outcome

But you could be right, I mean, there's definitely some things wrong with this theory, there's something wrong with every theory, so you could be right

Edited by Evertill: 9/6/2016 6:27:27 PMYou may very well be right, and I've considered this. My problem is why would they let Dredgen Yor, the traitor who is hated and despised and had killed people already, into the Crucible with a weapon that takes the light of guardians? While it is highly possible that he is still a different man than Pahanin, I highly doubt they would have let Dredgen Yor anywhere near the crucible or even the tower for that matter. I believe they are still referring to the man he was, whomever that may have been. But it's hard to say.. I still don't think they would have let Yor and Thorn as they were in their final form do any of that.

Edited by A Rising Wind: 9/8/2016 12:16:12 PMI agree with you on that they wouldn't let Yor in the crucible if he was ready fully corrupted. Still Pahanin seems too....quirky to be Yor. Yors previous self is described as honorable, well known, great deeds. Pahanin seems like an guardian with odd obsessions who is afraid to be alone. Him entering the VoG is the only significant thing he has accomplished, and even then, it was not something supported/sanctioned by the tower and it failed. It just doesn't seem to be important enough that if people found out he was Yor that it would crush their hopes. What I do think pahanin did is give a slim look into the true vex origins. He talked about how Kabr drank the vex fluid in the VoG, and it tasted like the sea. Which makes sense because the vex fluid is described as radiolarian, which is a marine animal. But then pahanin has several cloaks in which he seems to be obsessed with squids and cephalopods. I believe this obsession with squids is linked to drinking the vex fluid tasting like the sea and indicates what the original organic form of the vex.

Yeah the squids, the obvious connection would be the Gorgons though I am not sure if he would like them very much haha. I recently started to connect that to some of the races of Fundament, which if I recall at least one was described as squid like, but if was just a thought. As far as Pahanin's status as a Guardian, I have to disagree. Pahanin is one of the most well known Guardians we know about in the lore. He has his name all over the place and I think the Vault was a bigger deal than you might think. He wrote the Pahanin Errata and may have also written the book of (un)controversial advice(though it's not confirmed, just seems to make sense.) His words mark the most pieces of in-game items than anyone, and certainly for Hunters at least, left us with advice that nobody would follow or even take seriously at all unless you had at least some importance. And he was indeed quirky but I believe this was an important aspect to being a beacon of hope. That while he was broken inside, he was still seen as someone who could face the day with a smile and a joke. I don't imagine he was running around telling everyone how afraid he truly was, though it is stated clearly in the grimoire. He's almost like a comedian or at least the closet thing to one we've seen in destiny. Comedians often take some of the worst parts of the world and make it something we can laugh about, to conquer our fears and make a joke of it. Comedy gives many people hope in an otherwise dreary life. And like the comedians of modern day, they are light-hearted and can make us laugh when we are most down, but often suffer internally themselves. Depression, anger, mental illness have marked some of the greatest we know. I imagine that in the world of destiny, humor is a hard thing to come by. If they lost someone like Pahanin, not just physically but his spirit, I think if would have been a crushing blow to the hearts of guardians. But that's how I feel about it anyway!
