It's not so much that they flipped, but that democrats began to embrace far more liberal ideologies and have moved further and further left over the decades. Republicans have always been a mixed bag of moderates with several liberal tendencies and more conservative members. Republicans have occasionally moved left and right on the spectrum, but they've stayed more or less the same. But liberals have gone off the deep end recently.
