It's because the moon is much closer to the Earth than the Sun is. The moon orbits us closely (relatively speaking), while the sun is 3 planets away. That's how perspective works.

But what is the chance that both the sun AND moon just happen to be the right distances from earth so as to appear exactly the same size? It seems like quite a big chance to me...
