Louisiana is flooding, and nobody cares.

"There is no such thing as television news in this country. There are networks that peddle entertainment under the guise of news." I wish more people understood this. I've been volunteering at a shelter in Baton Rouge for the past 2 days, helping the THOUSANDS of people who have been displaced by this historic flooding event. Thousands of homes have been completely lost. Approximately 35,000 customers in Baton Rouge alone do not have power. Cell phone service is down in parts of the city. Landline phone service (which almost never goes down in disaster situations) is also offline for many residents. This is absolute devastation. It will take months for the city to return to a functional state, and years for the lives of the thousands of people impacted by this terrible tragedy to return to normal. I lived through Hurricane Katrina, and I was actually in New Orleans when it happened, so trust me when I say that this disaster is just as bad and has caused just as much devastation. It wasn't a hurricane, so there was no dramatic wind damage or flying debris. Just the steady, impending threat of slowly rising water across almost half the state. Just as many people, if not more, were affected by this disaster as were affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. If you can spare $10, please text LAFLOODS to 90999. The donation will be added to your next phone bill, but will be paid out immediately.

it floods every summer its called the Mississippi flood plane+ fact that much of the lower state is below sea level moral: move out of Louisiana besides thanx to the oil refinery lane along the interstate: 1/7th the state is a cancer ally theres a reason most of the state population is low income to poverty level.

      • Y'know id like to think they'd instill some sort of system to prevent catastrophic flooding after hurricane Katrina. Of course I don't wish the flood on them but it's almost to be expected to happen again if they don't do something about it.

      • Is there any other source of donating? I plan in donating but I don't trust that shit. A number that can alternate my phone bill? What else could they do? Any info on another source to help would be appreciated

        • You can thank liberals for that. They don't care unless Syrian refugees live there.

        • You're asking a bunch of 15 year olds to donate their allowance money towards disaster relief. If you actually want to get through to people with any sort of empathy, I would strongly suggest taking your pleas elsewhere.

Floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, earthquakes. America experiences these all the time and is shown on media. People see such natural disasters as normal everyday experiences.

                •
Louisiana is flooding, and nobody cares.
Really? Because I hear about it everywhere I go. But it's kinda hard to be surprised by this when you build your cities below sea level with whole ton of rivers nearby and crumbling infrastructure...

                  • For people not familer with the area, my house is in baton rouge. Not zoned as a flood zone. My exact location is 46 feet above sea level and more than 5 miles (up hill) from the nearest river. I received 2 feet worth of water in my house, ruined almost everything i owned, almost surly totaled my girlfriends car (full coverage thou), and i have no flood insurance ( back to the no flood zone thing), and im considered lucky compared to most people here. Not asking for pitty, or remorse. I will rebuild and move on like the rest. I just wanted to provide some perspective to the people that truly have no idea, and truly want to know.

Funny, when Bush was president, people and Kanye blasted him for shit. Plus this is a salon link, so they are blaming Republicans somehow for it. Edit: I volunteered to help with clean up back then. Was robbed at gun point while helping the people out.

                      • if an area keeps flooding, common sense would be to move away. sucks for those that died though.

Saw it on the news like a couple days ago. -blam!- off. Edit: I'm from Houston, remember our floods from earlier this year? More people died than in yours. So -blam!- off twice.
