If the earth is flat then how come it is day and night at different times?

The sun is smaller and much closer to the surface of the earth, it acts more as a spot light. It rotates above the surface of the disk. The seasons (and differing sunrise/sunset times) are caused as the sun cyclically widens and contracts in its orbit.

It is, but it does not emit light equally in all directions.

If it did, we would see it at all times of the day. At best earth would experience only twilight.

Not if the earth was a sphere.... I'm asking what observations of the sun lead you to believe that it only shines light in certain directions? Don't assume the earth is flat or spherical.

But the assumed shape of the earth is exactly what led me to believe the sun acts as a spotlight. Just like the assumed belief that earth is round led spherists to believe that is has a giant molten, circulating core. They have never directly observed it, just like I have never directly observed the sun. However, making such assumption can sometimes be safe depending on your total body of observational knowledge.

You mean geothermal heat and the magnetic field of the earth aren't observations?
