If the earth is flat then how come it is day and night at different times?

  • The sun is smaller and much closer to the surface of the earth, it acts more as a spot light. It rotates above the surface of the disk. The seasons (and differing sunrise/sunset times) are caused as the sun cyclically widens and contracts in its orbit.

  • So the sun is not a sphere is what you are saying?

  • It is, but it does not emit light equally in all directions.

  • Why not?

  • If it did, we would see it at all times of the day. At best earth would experience only twilight.

  • Not if the earth was a sphere.... I'm asking what observations of the sun lead you to believe that it only shines light in certain directions? Don't assume the earth is flat or spherical.

  • But the assumed shape of the earth is exactly what led me to believe the sun acts as a spotlight. Just like the assumed belief that earth is round led spherists to believe that is has a giant molten, circulating core. They have never directly observed it, just like I have never directly observed the sun. However, making such assumption can sometimes be safe depending on your total body of observational knowledge.

  • You mean geothermal heat and the magnetic field of the earth aren't observations?
