When you place them adjacent to each other, you'll see a colored border. That means they are linked. You get a bonus to the stats provided when they are linked. The more you have linked together, the bigger the bonus.

as far as I can tell, they don't NEED to be. But they should be. It helps.

I'll give it a shot and switch things around so they line up more. Right now though I can't even play longer than 30 seconds because the game keeps crashing. I made my 9th jump and now everytime I'm leave the space station it crashes.
