My starting planet was filled to the brim with plutonium and the space station was buying it for 102% of the galactic value. Needless to say I went straight back down with both my ship and my character with it, went back up and bought a new 1,000,000 credit ship. Not too bad for my first 2 hours.

You got lucky as hell. I'd recommend always carrying a few million units just incase a ship catches your eye.
