Like I said in a different reply, if you listen to the lyrics of these bands you'll realize how edgy they are. "Life it seems will fade away / Drifting further everyday / Getting lost within myself," you don't see how emo that is? Not bashing them, I'm a fan of metallica, but it's hilarious to me how people never understand the lyrics of anything they listen to.

Look at the era difference. The bands you describe sound like complaining while the bands described in the other comment are more hardcore. They mean it and they don't want others to care.

It isn't emo. It's about grieving a loss (in Metallica's case, their stolen equipment) and learning about your own mortality. That song saved a lot of lives. After Ride the Lightning was released, Metallica received thousands of letters from people who decided not to kill themselves because that song. Also, the bands OP listed are under the category "emo" and "emo rock". Metallica and Megadeth are thrash metal bands, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath are heavy metal bands, and Death is a death metal band.

Emo being short for emotional, it is in fact emo since sadness is a pretty heavy emotion. Mortality is also a pretty common theme in the lyrics of emo bands. Additionally I'd like to point out that the majority of the kids who listen to the bands op listed are also fans of the bands you listed. These days metal is a part of emo culture just as much as self harm is.

So you're basically saying every song that was ever made is emo. Every song creates some sort of emotion. Also, people who listen to the bands OP listed do not listen to the bands I listed. They might have listened to a few Metallica songs since Metallica is by far the most popular metal band there is, but if you asked a fall out boy fan to name one album by Death they wouldn't be able to.
