Time paradox.
Since the guardians warned about the the darkness, the golden age could prepare and defeat it.
That would mean the ghosts shouldn't exist, therefore no guardians either.

How about this though: what if the guardians going back in time was actually the catalyst? Humans decided to try and make a defence because of the warning, weren't able to, failed, guardians were made which brings us back to current day
