I dig this.
Perhaps the nine are able to cross between our side of the veil into the Darkness' side, and back, at will.
What if the nine are third God-force?
The Traveler, The Darkness, and The Nine to balance.
It fulfills the Tricorn idea of Destiny.
Three sides of the Tricorn (destiny logo).
Three Guardians.
Three races.
Three classes and three subclasses.
Three weapons.
Three abilities.
Three gods: Dark, Light, and In between.
Furthermore, six and nine are multiples of three.
Six guardians in a Raid
The Nine
Etc.
Idk, it's 3:00 am and I can't sleep. But this is just food for thought.

Perhaps the Nine are also helping the darkness, and we just don't know it, if they are in between then it is very possible. Furthermore, perhaps they are just watching our war with the darkness for their enjoyment, and ARE the third, and most powerful god power. Do they have the power to sway the tide of this war however they wish, they bring us exotics each week, yes, but perhaps they do the same to the darkness. Is there a second agent of the nine, that helps the darkness? Many of the artifacts that Xur brings us each week are Hive or darkness related, perhaps the nine bring the forces of evil light - related weapons, is that how they got the shard of the traveler? If they have the ability to cross through the void and the veil at will, they must be more powerful than the other two forces (light and dark). Food for thought. Replies welcomed :)

Yes, my thoughts exactly! They are just like the Light and Darkness but seem to be separate entities contributing to the whole. There were multiple Ahamkara (the Nine, for example), multiple incarnations of the Light (there were others besides the Traveler, read Dreams of Alpha Lupi grimoires), but seemingly only one conscious representing the Darkness
