Encrypted messages and such alternate timelines

In the "encrypted" part, what you're seeing is the internal workings of an Exo's mind. Since it's a machine, it thinks in code. If you read the sections in bold it works like dialogue: Bardo-105 is either "thinking" or having conversations with other people. The alternate timelines are plot devices. Essentially, when he has to make a decision (kill or spare the stranger with his face), the universe splits into two to accomodate both decisions. In the Delta timeline, Bardo-105 kills the stranger, destroying his Ghost in the process. Then he goes to Variks to continue the hunt for Sadeski's Premise, the exotic scout rifle. In the Kappa timeline, Bardo-105 and the stranger join forces and try to find a cure for the Blight. To prevent the universe from collapsing due to having two of the same people, Bardo-105 switches bodies with Lakshmi-2's help in order to become a Warlock. That's a very, very simplified version, the ramifications of each timeline are a little more complex.
