After Phil announced the Scorpio i think Sony just backed off. The neo at this point is still speculation as i don't think anything has been official confirmed unlike the Scorpio. Back to the drawing board I guess for Sony.
At the beginning of the console war of Xbox one vs PS4 everyone on Sony's side were just saying how it's more powerful, nothing else. Now that the Scorpio has been confirmed all I hear is everyone talking about exclusives instead, completely dismissing the power. If you want the most powerful system the Scorpio is the way to go for sure.
Having a PC and complaining that all exclusives are moving over there from xbox doesn't really matter, seeing as most console players don't own both pc and console.
I hear everyone saying they might as well build a PC instead of buying the Scorpio, which is completely fine but you still have to buy windows 10. The more people that can enjoy Microsoft exclusives the better. They're giving you a choice unlike Sony, I don't see this as a bad thing. I enjoy consoles, and I'd rather have a really powerful console over a pc any day, and I'm sure a lot of gamers feel the same way.
Whether it be buying a Scorpio or buying a PC, you still get to enjoy the games. I don't really see a downside as many people are claiming. "Microsoft just shot themselves in the foot!" That is completely untrue, quite the opposite. Sure there might not be as many Scorpio players as ps4 neo, but considering how many pc players get to enjoy them it's a win win for microsoft and fans alike.

I thinks a good and bad situation, good that PC and Xbox get coop cross play and PC gets the exclusives as well, bad for Scorpio sales since PC will have all the same games.
-
But it's not like every pc gamer will be able to play them, it's for Windows 10 only. And there's still a lot of people that hate windows 10. And the Scorpio will still be the most powerful console, so that alone will give it sales depending on the price
-
The Scorpio will still sell. It has console accessibility with PC power. PC players are getting console exclusives and Xbox players are getting PC power. Microsoft is just strengthening its player base.

Edited by DELIVER ME MEMES: 6/29/2016 12:55:40 AMPC has freedom of choice... you don't have to buy windows 10. you can get any windows you want(legitimate keys can be had for much cheaper than buying install media, and i believe microsoft has a free system image repository to make your own .iso file install media), if you even want windows. you can run mac-unix(dualbooting Hackintosh builds can be great for professional A/V editors), any of the thousands of forms of linux, or direct Unix architectures, depending on your needs. the only reason windows is considered the best (besides marketshare) for gaming is that after MS-dos died down(and most people stopped doing things at command-line function menus), they developed the platform as primarily a Graphical User Interface with tacked on computational power functions below that in terms of needs/usefulness, where as the other systems(minus mac) are the reverse of that. steamboxes are overpriced, configuration locked HTPCs much like the new "generation" of consoles on the way, the difference is that they use the Steam-OS, a gimped version of the Debian Linux system for steam big picture mode.
-
But I was mostly talking about Microsoft exclusives. I'm pretty sure you can't run the games on anything other than windows 10.
-
maybe, maybe not. someone might make patches/mods to drop that, or hopefully they'll get smart and drop that requirement because most people(including me) still aren't using windows 10 as of the last steam survey. people like 10 because it was free, but at the cost of control/freedom. you don't truly own your own system.
-
Microsoft's exclusives only run on Windows 10. They will not change this.
-
they're not going to be on steam unless they revert to the old game framework instead of their new shitty API. gaben has said so.

Edited by Psychic Donuts: 7/2/2016 9:26:25 AMGaben hates windows and also swore that all of PC gaming would move to UNIX about four years ago. Look out that turned out.
-
unix? you can't game on mac or BSD?
-
Are you seriously counting MacOS as an OS to game on?

you said Unix.
-
Yes, Unix. He may have specified which version but I can't remember.

Well said.

Edited by Vgnut: 6/26/2016 1:39:07 AMYou're right that people focus too much on console power. Where it matters is in the greater narrative of the consoles. The PS4 being more powerful and developer friendly than the Xbox One reinforced the idea that Sony was all about video games and that Microsoft was about -blam!-ing us over. I don't think Sony is backing off the Neo because of the Scorpio announcement. Why? They're doing tremendously better than Microsoft is with the Xbox. So will Scorpio being more powerful matter? Depends. Will the Neo potentially launching earlier affect the Neo? Are people even going to buy into the idea of incrementally upgraded consoles when all signs have pointed to this being something we don't really want? What are prices? And ultimately it's about the games. Microsoft isn't putting out games at the quality level Sony is. And third parties make more money off Playstation platforms as there are far more of them. Honestly I think Microsoft still has years ahead of repairing the damage done and creating an ecosystem that appeals to people more than what Sony is offering. On top of that the Sony output of exclusive content looks to continue being relentless. I think Microsoft continues to put the cart before the horse.
-
The PS4 being more "developer friendly"? What is the main OS for all indies or all games at that? Windows. What does the Xbox run? Windows. It literally is a dedicated windows PC. It doesn't get much 'developer friendly' than that.
-
Absolutely Sony and the PS4 were more developer friendly when these consoles launched. Swathes of developers were publicly bashing Microsoft. There were indie developers that professed their hatred of Microsoft and how backwards some of their policies were. The PS4 architecture actually makes it easier to develop for than the Xbox One. Microsoft running a version of Windows 10 for the Xbox One doesn't make them more developer friendly. You're conflating several things because Microsoft stamps too many things with Windows 10. The actual games made for Windows 10 and sold on Microsoft's Windows 10 Store have been hamstrung by challenging development issues. Quantum Break's PC version and the Rise of the Tomb Raider Windows 10 version (again the Windows 10 version sold on Microsoft's Windows 10 Store, not the Steam version) have had issues. In the expose about Lionhead's closure a staffer talked about how difficult it was getting Fable Legends on to the Windows 10 Store. Anyways back to the original point. Microsoft has of course made strides in repairing their relationship with the greater developer community and I imagine the minor hurdles it took to bring games to the Xbox One in 2013 have probably been smoothed over.
-
I'm not talking about then, I'm talking about now. Yes, the Xbox One had a rocky launch and now they are making up for lost time but that doesn't make it any worse.
-
Well not quite. Developing these "helix" games that have an Xbox One and Windows 10 version has been pretty rocky. Developers don't want to have anything to do with Microsoft's vision for PC gaming. EA and Blizzard do their own thing and then everyone else is on Steam. Steam is where the money is at and it's much easier to get your game on Steam. This is why I continue to question the strategy behind Microsoft's Xbox One/Windows 10 plans. Like I said Microsoft having Windows 10 on PC's and an Xbox One OS that's an adapted version of Windows 10 does not make them more developer friendly. In fact I'd say that's irrelevant. It's the hardware architecture that matters most for developing a game and porting it to a console.
-
It is more for their exclusives rather than 3rd party games. In all EA games you can sign into your EA account so why not make a voucher so when you buy it on Xbox you own it on Origin? I see what you are saying now. I never heard about devs complaining about the way the Xbox One was built. I heard complaining about policies and such but never hardware architecture.
-
The Xbox One was never considered something overly challenging to develop for. It didn't get the flak the PS3 got. Developers did by in large acknowledge that the PS4 was easier to develop for. Unlike previous generations the PS4 and XB1 basically have the guts of a PC. With that said, given they have been out for years now, I imagine any bumps in the road for XB1 development have been smoothed out. We don't see the kind of discrepancies in PS4 and XB1 games as we did in 2013 and through 2014.
-
Edited by Psychic Donuts: 6/30/2016 8:48:06 AMBack then they also didn't allow you to use the same code on your Windows game's Xbox version. I agree though. The differences between the Xbox and Playstation this generation are almost none-existent when compared to past generations.
-
Sony all about games? Phil is a real gamer get real. He even has a playstation because he is above you as a gamer and worthy to head xbox
-
I don't agree with how you say Sony is putting out better exclusives. I haven't bought a ps4 yet due to my lack of interest in its exclusives. At e3 they showed off many more exclusives than Microsoft, but they didn't even have release dates, pretty much everything Microsoft announced was coming out this year. You can't say one company has better games, it's just an opinion. Sure, Sony has probably about double or triple the sales Microsoft does with the consoles, but there's still millions of people that own an xbox one. They had a very rough start due to all their talk of DRM and having the kinect come with the console making it cost $100 more. Microsoft is well on their way to fixing their mistakes. Phil Spencer is doing everything in his power to keep their fans. These new consoles will definitely make the whole console war change drastically i believe. I still don't think Microsoft will ever catch up in sales this gen, but they seem to be doing everything they can and making the xbox/pc community a much better place.

Edited by Vgnut: 6/26/2016 6:52:15 AMMost years you're getting at least one Playstation exclusive top those GOTY lists. It's going to be Uncharted 4 this year. It was Bloodborne last year. In 2013 it was The Last of Us. This matters for Microsoft in terms of their pure strategy. What you or I think of these exclusives is irrelevant. This is the reality of the situation. There just aren't big Xbox exclusives becoming those critical darlings. Again it plays into the narrative that Sony is all about games. And it's games that carry these things. I absolutely can say one company is putting out better games than the other. When was the last time Microsoft put out a game on par with a Naughty Dog title? Or even Bloodborne? Microsoft has had a crisis with first party developers for a number of years and it's killing them when you look at what Sony and Nintendo developers put out. Yes I think the Phil Spencer era is infinity better than the Mattrick era. Mattrick came close to killing the Xbox division. What speaks volumes is what Microsoft is doing with Gears of War 4 and Sony is doing with God of War. Both games were exhausted and released mediocre titles in 2013 (Judgement and Ascension). How have they responded? Sony has completely refreshed God of War and now it's one of the most talked games coming out of E3. Microsoft has set up an entire studio to pretend they're Epic so they can release the same tired Gears of War. No one is talking about Gears of War coming out of E3.
