Also if im not mistaken, many south american countries (capitalist or socialist) are generally poor

Look at neighboring Chile. They're the 10th freest economy in the world, and their quality of life is growing the fastest of any nation in South America. The two countries are similar geographically and culturally. One is socialist, and it's choking. The other embraces more free market policies, and it's flourishing.
