First off it's not sudden. The Fallen discovered it. It was locked away and kept secret. If Lord Saladin would have just told everyone about it, a Dredgen Yor wannabe would have gone and released it.
As for the consoles. It was gonna happen anyway. Bungie is probably adding something in this dlc that last gen can't handle. And they'd rather add it than wait till destiny 2.

As a casual gamer looking at the story Bungie has presented to us now, it feels sudden. This ideal could change later as time goes on and more information is released. I know that the universe of Destiny HAS to move on at some point, however I was expecting it to be in Destiny 2 where it would make some logical sense... it's a let down for us Last Gen players because if we can't upgrade we can't play new content anymore

Yeah. Everyone was thinking that would happen at destiny 2, but what you gonna do now? Upgrade i guess. Good luck to those who still need to upgrade to current gen

I wouldn't hold my breath for that but it would be nice to see that they helped people out
