After a lot of thorough research conducted by both the B.net & Reddit community, we cant be 100% certain, but can confidently speculate that Dr. Shim was a Vex overmind living in a human host within a simulation. Long story short, we are all inside a vex simulation, despite perceiving that we are in the future/present, are actually in the synthetic past (traversing the fabric of time at a rate of x1000 that what we actually perceive) and serve for observational purposes to whether our Destiny is fixed of whether Shim's changes could alter future outcomes for the Human species.

That's pure speculation, and while a semi common year 1 theory has been pretty much abandoned. Mostly because bungie released grimoire (vex 4) during the HoW that says shim and the others exited the vex simulation.

Edited by Synergy-Seven: 6/9/2016 10:05:35 AMyeah, whether or not humans exist in the present or what we consider as the future is unknown, we actually think vex are running these simulations to 'debunk' the Destiny/Fate theory and are actually trying to find a way to preserve the human species within the simulation. Shim vaguely disclosed about known methods to port subjects from simulations out into the real world, but first our " ill-fated history has to be corrected." I think the vex want to co-exist with humans, but dont want us in their world if we inevitably prove self-destructive, rendering their efforts futile. Only logic as to 'why' vex want us, is perhaps WE could have been their creators and they feel some kind of sentiment. Often speculated the VoG was the nexus from the simulation into the real world.

Man, that's really deep, I'm going to have to look way more into this! Hopefully future expansions explain this.
