What I don't understand is why Taken Vandals have a Ward of Dawn-like ability. It clearly is exactly a Defender's WoD, yet the lore states that guardians can't be taken. Did they simply copy the ability from seeing us fight, as they took their new, Taken form?

No, it's not a copy but a manifestation of power. GuRdians cannot be taken by oryx because they already have been taken by the traveler - fundamentally changed to harness the light. What oryx does is the exact same thing except they are changed to harness the dark.

I'm going to go with a more ancient and evil origin for the takens bubble shield. Lazy Bungie developers and quite possibly the biggest evil in the Destiny universe....the one called Luke Smith.

As most Vandals are snipers (Stealth Vandals are the exception and I dont recall seeing a Taken one) their main weakness is defense, so Oryx did what he always does, gave them the ability to overcome that weakness, hence why when you aim at them they deploy it. The fact that it looks like a WoD is of no consequence, afterall the most defensive shield geometry any species could think of would be a sphere, would it not? Your assumption that Taken Vandals might somehow be Defender Titans is far fetched to say the least, their Taken Eliksni, nothing more.

We can also safely assume that the Taken Vandals' shield isn't made of light. Even though it functions the same as WoD, it's definitely different

Well according to the taken Vandal card, a vandal's fear is the constant fear that at any moment their captain could cut two of their arms off and they'll be reduced to a dreg again. The knife a vandal take up is a knife shaped like [this place is mine] It's a solution to their fear because it gives them a sense of safety from everything.

Exactly like ward of dawn, except it's got like a 30 second cool down and you can shoot from inside it, oh and it's not purple. ;-)
