Toland seems to be succumbing to the Darkness. That is the same ideology that the Hive has. He is upset when nobody replaced Oryx. He converses with the Darkness. He made a gun from Darkness. I wouldn't be surprised if he became an enemy of the Light.

Perhaps he is upset because we are throwing away an opportunity. He may be thinking that if a guardian takes over as King we could hijack the hive and point it away from earth. Though, I don't think a guardian could do that and still serve the light. They would eventually be consumed like Toland was.
