Did you actually read the book of sorrows grimoire before coming up with this?? The vex didn't take anything. The vex in the garden are trying to replicate the powers the hive have which involves worship and what not, whereas the the vex in the vault are more 'scientifically' focused.

Though it never talked specifically what the vex did while on the dreadnought after crota let em in. Aside from make a vex mind with sword logic. (And a small clash with the hive) I also suggested that they may have just found it on mars or maybe got it from crota somehow. I do agree that they're trying to simulate a sort of blight. But many of the cards suggest that the vex rather "came across" or "found" this instrument of darkness before they started working with it.
