Had to be an exotic from an purple engram.
They will max at 300.
The first one I got threw me a bit too, so it is understandable.

If you can record yourself getting a 300 from an exotic engram as a 335 then I'll believe you Until then I'm calling bullshit

It has happened. I can recall getting a Peregrine Greaves from a ToC exotic engram from Crucible plenty of weeks back. But this is very rare in general.
