Not really, but it got pretty sad with either ending. Either he becomes hollow or dies gloriously.

I remember that it was quite tricky to keep him alive in the poisonpit if you didn't cheese the enemies with arrows first, the ending was kinda sad untill you realised you got a slab for it.
